The floor above this shop later became the home of Streamline Taxis for many years
before their move to Piccadilly.
this time from 1900,
it shows horse drawn cabs waiting on the rank.
At this time there was a licence condition saying that Hackney proprietors had to live within 7 miles of the Minster.
This was to save the horses becoming exhausted before they started work.
Incredibly York Council refused to remove this rule when Motor Cars were introduced, and it wasn't until Peter Wheatley appealed this rule in 1983,
and won, in York Crown Court,
that York Council reluctantly had to remove it.
For many years
these premises had been a Fish and Chip shop.
shortly after it opened in 1991.
It shows what was
York's first computerised dispatch system
designed and programmed by Peter Wheatley.
